The Late-Arriving Spring
(A Paean to the Winslow Family Farm, Falmouth, Maine)
By Ross Alan Bachelder, www.artsaplenty.ME
You way down in the soil of the Winslow Family Farm:
By being so damned lazy, you’re doing untold harm!
A seedling should be growing, not dozing in its trough.
You call it hibernating — we call it sluffing off!
“So where are all those seedlings,” say your neighbors old and new,
Why still beneath the soil? You’ve got so much work to do!
You’re shamefully delinquent — can you not understand?
The flowers and the vegetables will soon be in demand!
Why so dreadfully tardy — so absurdly slow to flower?
What’s taking you a good long year I could do in one short hour!
Release the philodendrons and the Woodland Dutchman’s Breeches!
The Cauliflower and Basil, the Artichokes and Peaches!
Can’t you see? We’re all so hungry -- we're in need of Winslow’s gifts!
— So bring those seedlings up from the ground and give us all a lift!
